Effie – Activity #6: "Creatures In Plasticine"
Activity #6: “Creatures In Plasticine”
The Barbara Reid Technique
This is another activity using the 3-D model, allowing students to explore unique and creative mediums to tell a story.
Materials:
- 3 ½” square piece of cardboard
- Various colours of plasticine (at least 5 different colours)
- Insect images pages (from activity #4: Insects in the Grass)
Teacher Preparation:
- Create enough 3 ½” x 3 ½” pieces of cardboard for each student
Step by Step:
Step One: Review what makes the artwork in Effie so unique.
Step Two: Display the Insect Images page to give the students an idea of what insect they would like to create with their plasticine. (Placing the Effie book on display will also be helpful).
Step Three: On their piece of cardboard, have the students design their small scene (skyline, grass, trees, flowers, dirt, insect, etc.) and then begin working on the background.
Step Four: Encourage students to press firmly and to keep the plasticine thinly spread so that it adheres to the cardboard and on top of the other layers of plasticine.
End Product:
A miniature scene by each student modeled after the technique of Barbara Reid from the Effie book.
