Doggie in the Window – Activity #4: "Mademoiselle Madeleine’s Purse"
Activity 4: “Mademoiselle Madeleine’s Purse”
This activity is a higher difficulty level for the students, requiring careful folding and gluing. Rather than have all of the students complete this activity, the teacher can create one purse for display purposes on the Doggie in the Window bulletin board.
Materials:
- 12 x 18 white paper
- Tempera paint of various colours
- Scissors
- Oil pastels
- Coloured construction paper
- Glue or tape
Teacher Preparation:
- N/A
Step by Step:
Step One: Students draw a design on a 12 x 18 inch piece of white paper using oil pastels.
Step Two: Using a light colour of tempera paint, students paint a wash over the oil pastel design. Allow to dry.
Step Three: Fold in each end, leaving a 4 inch base in the middle.
Step Four: Cut a 2 inch slit along the folded base edge.
Step Five: Fold up the side of the base and fold in edges to create a closed side seam.
Step Six: Tape or glue shut.
Step Seven: Using coloured construction paper, create a handle and decorative edging.
End Product:
A beautiful paper hand-bag decorated and painted by the students. Students have also persevered to fold the bag correctly to create their finished product.
