Because Amelia Smiled – Activity #5: “Good Deeds, Good Hearts Quilt”
Activity #5: “Good Deeds, Good Hearts Quilt”
Each student creates one piece of a large paper quilt that comes together to show good deeds the student have done. This activity reinforces that students must all work together to be successful.
Materials:
- 6” x 6” white paper
- 5” x 1” strips of white paper
- 8 ½” x 11” red construction paper
- Heart template (provided – optional)
- Black construction paper
- Glue
- Scissors
- Student journals
Teacher Preparation:
- Cut enough 6” x6” square of white paper for each student
- Cut enough 5” x11” strips of white paper for each student
Step by Step:
Step One: Review from the story the impact we all have on others. Brainstorm ideas of the kinds of acts we could perform to make a positive impact in the classroom.
Step Two: Have students write ideas in their journals and then choose one of their acts to try in the classroom.
Step Three: Have students try some of their ideas for a day in the classroom.
Step Four: Have the students turn their white squares of paper slightly, so the square becomes a diamond. Glue the heart onto the centre of the white diamond.
Step Five: Have students write a sentence on the white paper strip that indicates what good deed they have practiced in the classroom. (E.g. – I helped put up some of the chairs. I shared my recess snack with Fred. etc.)
Step Six: Glue each white sentence strip on black construction paper and cut out leaving a small border.
Step Seven: Glue the sentences onto the hearts.
Step Eight: Teacher can arrange all the diamond shaped squares into the shape of a quilt on the bulletin board.
End Product:
Once these are all displayed on the bulletin board, the classroom will have a heart-shaped quilt illustrating various ways that students have made an impact in the classroom.
