Because Amelia Smiled – Activity #6: Optional Ideas
Activity #6: Optional Ideas
Below is a list of optional ideas that could be used with this book.
Have students think about the past couple of days and list 3 kind things people have done to make them smile. Now have the students think of 3 things they have done in the past couple of days to make someone else smile. Have them write about how it made them feel.
Have the students pick one of the characters from the story and create their own fictional story for that character based on the facts given in Stein’s story.
Bring an old suitcase or backpack to the classroom. Prior to the activity, the teacher will have put into the suitcase a fictional postcard (that was made ahead of time on an index card). Pretend it was sent to the teacher from somewhere in the world. It can be from a fictional person. Now have each student design a postcard on their own index card that was “sent” from someplace in the world by “someone”. Put the cards into the suitcase. Have fun seeing where the postcards supposedly came from, find the locations on a world map, and read the positive message that was written on the back of each of the postcards.
