Activity #1: “Joining In”

This activity teaches the social skill of joining in. Students review the positive steps to joining in by reviewing both verbal and non-verbal cues.

Materials:

  • Chart paper
  • Felt pens
  • Steps to Joining In template (provided)

Teacher Preparation:

  • Have the below two charts prepared on chart paper to complete with the students
  • Create a large version of the “Steps to Joining In” to review with the students and post in the classroom

 

Step by Step:

Step One: Talk to the students about how having friendly body language (Eg. a smile) is important when they want to join in. Have the students brainstorm what shy, angry, and friendly body language would look like, using the chart template provided. Record ideas on chart paper.

Step Two: Talk to the students about how having a friendly voice is also important when they want to join in. Have the students brainstorm what a shy, angry, and friendly voice would sound like, using the chart template provided. Record ideas on chart paper.

Step Three: Review the Steps To Joining In poster with the students. Once the students understand each step, permanently display the poster in your classroom.
